If Augustus is right, then clap your hands,
Though I beg of you,
Do not dismiss me with applause from the arena;
At the very least, do not cage the lions in my heart
Burn my flesh like a blasphemer of the gods
Because you are a fine puppeteer, beloved
With the way you've sown my mouth shut
And used my body to recite ancient monologues;
The audience falls silent
As their faces stand at attention with ears pricked up
Watching me as I argue against the sun
I am no better than a gladiator in lacking liberty-
Neither labeled human nor given a right to morals
Right hand to left foot;
I'm tied down to the bottom of my bones,
Living with the ghosts of never vanquishing memories
Rise up from my bones, avenging spirit;
May you find no shelter from the storm
Unable to seek solace, may you meet your demise--alone
Without a heart, panting in a poisoned, damned cavern
That for as long as you walk with the living,
Your shadows will haunt and scoff at you
This I pray, but alas!
The fleeting years slip away, and beloved,
You have me broken;
Molded in your spitting image,
I can only but parrot your ways
I can never turn my back on you
Because you speak Orphic prophecies
And condemn me into submission,
Then abandon me on islands with nothing
But your siren's gaze
Break whatever keeps my frame upright,
Because I was once made of marble
And you left me nothing but clay;
Holding me with the same coursing cold blood
That killed the thumping of my soul
You whisper,
Per aspera ad astra
Though I beg of you,
Do not dismiss me with applause from the arena;
At the very least, do not cage the lions in my heart
Burn my flesh like a blasphemer of the gods

i.
you are six shades of sadness
on a too cold, too big seat,
a shrunken apostrophe and
paroxysmal, the balls of your feet
strumming the hours gone
("i want to go home,
please, please, i just
want to go home").
ii.
it is your relief and your regret
that she knows you so well.
It is she who brings forth a doctor
then, when you are past talking-down, done,
wrung out and horse-footed in your need
("let me go home, please,
please, i just
need to go home")
iii.
softly accented words spoken off to the side:
"Yes. Let's keep her voluntary now,
it will be quicker: but if her wings sprout
and itchy feet sample corridors,
we'll make it an order."

i have planted my city heart in the dust
and set it aflame.
my new one can taste the wind's origins,
it knows how to ponder heavy thoughts with dark clouds,
it knows the motives behind the rain drop's dances.
--
the sun was eating my skin but
no matter, i can regrow.
i could feel the quivering earth in the bees' hum and
the rhythm of each passing second in the ants' march.
i wanted to tell you i love you because
in all the beautiful expanses of raw earth and passion i have never seen a face so fine.
--
it is four at dawn and the world is tumbling,
lights and numbers are exploding,
we are dying,
time is not waiting.

Which lines did you like the most?
What do you think of the flow?
Was the poem too lengthy or too short or just right?

I loved all the allusions to the Roman empire here: Augustus, the Arena, Icarus, marble/clay (Augustus: "I found Rome clay and left it marble") Really cool for history geeks and literature fans alike!
